We were lucky with the weather- after a very wet Thursday night, Friday began with persistent rain and at one point we were considering whether or not to go ahead.

About 11am the sun broke through and our spirits rose.

We did not actually need sun cream, but it soon became clear that this November day was going to be an unseasonably mild one, so we set up our equipment ready for another spectacular display from Peter and his firing team.

The food teams got the marquees and lighting ready for the gates to open at 6:30.

Two children bringing a Guy got in free, so it is not surprising that we had over 30 sitting comfortably round the bonfire (the Guys that is!)

Jenny chose the Best Guy and this was carried to the top chair by the bonfire team (Robert & Geoff). The winner pressed the button and Brian's electronically controlled ignition system exploded on cue, and soon the fire was well alight.

Promptly at 7:30 the fireworks began: You can see from the photos and video that it was worth all the effort.

We had quite a few new helpers- thank you, you made a big difference. We need just a few more and the future of Haddenham's Bonfire Night will be assured. If you are keen to see this tradition continue please use the email link and I will send you contact & AGM details.

As the cold winter evenings prepare to draw in, save on your fuel bills for at least one evening and warm yourself by a real fire at Haddenham's Annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display. As usual the event will take place at Fairchild's Meadow, this year on Friday 4th November. Admission is the same as last year, a mere £4 per head (£2 for children), and the gates are open from 6.30 onwards.

Once in the field you can buy hot drinks, jacket potatos, soup and burgers / sausages before watching the sky light up before your very eyes (we'll even offer a few veggie burgers to extend our range). I'm afraid no sparklers or personal fireworks are permitted but up to 2 children can get in free if they bring a guy for the Best Guy competition. If children bring the guy down to the fire we'll ensure that the guys get a suitably warm reception.

This all takes place thanks to the efforts of the Haddenham Bonfire Committee, not to mention the friends, relations and other willing volunteers whose contribution is invaluable. Moving in short but frantic bursts throughout the year we raise funds via burger stands at village events to ensure that our annual display goes with a bang - so to speak!

However, invaluable though our helpers are, they are becoming increasingly stretched. We are in real need of additional help to ensure that this annual event can continue, and if nobody comes forward, either to help or to take over, the committee has reluctantly decided that next year's display will be the last.

DO YOU HAVE A BURNING DESIRE TO HELP?

If you have a a bit of time to spare, perhaps two or three times a year (especially in early November), Haddenham Bonfire Committee would like to hear from you.

Every November Fairchild's Meadow plays host to the annual Haddenham Bonfire & Fireworks Display. The Haddenham Bonfire Committee put on a spectacular and colourful fireworks display which you can watch from the warmth of a blazing bonfire - the right to ignite the fire being given to the child or children who make the best Guy.

It would be nice to think that setting all of this up and cleaning up afterwards just happens, but alas it does require a bit of effort. Not much. Just a bit. The Bonfire Committee puts in a few hours two or three times a year - primarily Blossoms & Bygones and the Robert Arkenstall School Fayre - to man our stand selling burgers and hotdogs, the income from which contributes towards the putting on of the November pyrotechnics. There are also plenty of jobs on the day of the Bonfire itself, from setting up the field, to stewarding, serving food, assisting in the display itself (after appropriate professional training) etc., not to mention an hour or two to clear up the following day.

We would like to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in either our fundraising or the event itself. On the basis that many hands make light work, there is no minimum commitment to be involved. If you can only spare an hour that's an hour's effort we can gladly make use of. Call our Chairman, Robert Bush, on 749792 for more information. Also call the same number from late September onwards if you have any wood, posts, felled trees etc. that you think could make good fuel for the bonfire.

HADDENHAM FUN RUN CANCELLED

Apologies to those who look forward to the Haddenham Fun Run but unfortunately the Bonfire Committee are unable to organise the event this year. Efforts were made to find an alternative organiser but ultimately these proved unsuccessful so the event has had to be cancelled. We are happy to talk to anyone willing and able to organise the event in future years. Please contact Robert Bush on 749792.

Haddenham & Aldreth Blossoms & Bygones

We had our marquee on the Crossroads Green again this year. As usual we had hot dogs, burgers and drinks for sale.

The weather was good so the villages of Haddenham & Aldreth played host to a huge number of visitors. We would like to think they came for our locally sourced best quality sausages and burgers, but in truth the two villages had many other attractions including the famous tractor rides, a double decker bus from many years ago, the brick museum, visits to the church tower (rare views of the village from this lofty perch) many private gardens, the restored mill- well the list goes on and the visitors were spoiled for choice.

This year Aldreth had made a splendid effort to create a forties theme to commemorate VE day. Many villagers were strutting about in real forties clothes and dozens of cars from the period turned up to park in gardens and on the street to give a genuine feel to the village.

Many Haddenham houses along the tractor ride routes were decked with bunting and flags, so the visitors sitting on straw bales set up in the high trailers got a good view as they whizzed from one attraction to the next.

Back in our marquee the food was selling fast and we were 'sold out' before the end of the day. The treasurer reported that a good sum was added to the bonfire night fund- so thank you to all members who contributed their time to this event- and of course a big thank you to our many customers.

Many heartfelt thanks to those members of the public who turned out to make the Haddenham Bonfire and Fireworks Display the success it was. Despite the miserable weather there was a good turnout of both public and guys, and congratulations to all of you who entered a guy - the quality was fantastic. Special congratulations to Hannah Turner, who made the winning guy.

The event cannot take place without the hard work of a great many people - not just the members of the Bonfire Committee but also those who helped on the gate, as stewards, in the food tent or helped set up and clean up the field before and after the event. They work tremendously hard and without their help the event simply would not happen. We are extremely grateful for your help and support.

The Bonfire Committee runs or gets involved in a few events throughout the year to help raise money to support the Bonfire and Fireworks Display. If you have a bit of time to spare to help us in our fundraising efforts please do not hesitate to drop us a line. Contact details are in the directory at the back of the Village Voice.

Please do not forget that Fairchilds Meadows are also used for grazing at other times, so try not to leave anything which might harm the animals. It is particularly important not to use sparklers which leave a thin wire, almost impossible for our Saturday clean-up volunteers to spot. In fact no personal fireworks are permitted by our insurance terms.

But there is no need for any of that- Peter's firework show promises to be bigger than ever- so come and enjoy it in a safe and friendly atmosphere!

This year’s Fun Run took place in perfect conditions for running – cloudy, but warm with a gentle breeze, and saw an impressive win for under sixteen Ryan Goodson, five seconds ahead of R. Marsden in second place, with Nick Ray coming in third.

Haddenham FunRun/Walk/Toddle 13th June 2010

Everyone’s a winner!

This year’s FunRun will be held on 13th June at Fairchild’s Meadow. A flat, child friendly course approximately 5k in length along mainly traffic free fen droves provides an opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities to test their legs or just take a jog or stroll in the countryside on a summer’s day.

Everybody that completes the course gets a well deserved medal, and the winners of each age category receive a personalised certificate framing their achievement plus a free ticket to the Haddenham bonfire display on Friday 5th November.

Dogs and pushchairs are welcome, and the results and pictures will be posted online after the event. The competitive element amongst you can see last year’s times by clicking on 2009 in the Blog Archive (on the right). Then click on June. Fancy turning up and trying to beat them?

"Come one, come all" we said, and despite some fairly miserable weather many of you accepted the invitation to view this year's Haddenham bonfire and fireworks display at Fairchild's Meadow.

By the time the bonfire was lit it was adorned by over two dozen guys, testament to the industrious nature of Haddenham's youngsters. And not just industrious but inventive too. Worth of particular mention was "Guy Forks", his arms adorned with implements that suggested he had been lulled to the field with the promise of a burger! In the end though this year's judge, Alistair Hull, decided on the best guy, and so, after a few technical hitches, the winners Zoe & Liam McGibbon finally consigned the bonfire and all who sailed in her to a fiery end.

With the fire nicely blazing away it was on with the show - and what a show! Once again the fireworks team did us proud, turning the sky a majestic array of colours while we "oooohhh"ed and "aaaahhh"ed below. Every year we imagine that the show can't be better than last year, and every year we are proved wrong. Well done guys.

And thank you also to the small army who helped set everything up, took it all down, and between times stewarded, cooked, served, stood by for emergencies, cooked and served some more and did the myriad of other jobs that enable us to continue to put on this staple of the village calendar. We honestly couldn't do it without you.

Not that we came away completely empty-handed. We appear to have acquired a child's hat and a pair of gloves that were parted from their owners. If you are missing them, contact me:

Many of our entrants take the run seriously and set out to achieve a good time over the 5km (apx) route, while others come to enjoy a more leisurely stroll with friends and family of all ages- even push chairs should manage the course.

The date is Sunday 21 June 2009

Registration opens at 10am and the Run starts at 10.30am

The course will be slightly longer this year- as soon as we know the distance it will be announced here

As in previous years we shall meet at the Fairchilds Meadows at the bottom of Chewells Lane
(If you come by car (WHY?) you need to park further up near the graveyard as there is no parking in the Meadows or on the rough part of Chewells Lane)

More details such as entry fee and prizes will be posted here as soon as they are decided

Don't forget- this event is for all types of participant from serious runners to families taking a more sedate stroll around our beautiful countryside away from the traffic and with time to chat

School Fayre 2009

We have been invited to attend the Robert Arkenstall School Fayre! This year it will be on the 4 July, and we shall be serving our sizzling sausages and blazing burgers from our magnificent marquee.

Bonfire Night 7 November 2008

It was a gamble choosing the Friday after the Saturday chosen by the other two local events (Wilburton and Sutton). Unfortunately for them their weather was very wet and attendances were well down. We were lucky- Friday the 7th was good all day, allowing us to set up in the dry and enjoy an evening of spectacular fireworks and a blazing bonfire in perfect weather.

Our attendance figures were well up on previous years
and our food marquee was kept busy for the whole evening-
we did not even get a break to see the fireworks!

Once again Peter and his firework team put on a great display,
Robert built a formidable bonfire which kept everyone warm on the outside and our range of hot dogs, burgers, drinks, soup and baked potatoes kept them warm inside.

Another successful bonfire night where families were able to enjoy the evening in safety amongst their friends.

Our thanks to the dozens of helpers who created it and our visitors who supported us and made it so worthwhile!

Fun Run 2008

The Fun Run which was to have been held in September has been cancelled for this year.
We shall be at the School Summer Fayre (see details below) and, of course, the fireworks and massive bonfire on Friday 7 November 2008.

The weather was brilliant all day- a complete contrast to last year. We were kept very busy whenever one of the tractor trailers arrived to drop off passengers, and there was a steady flow of customers in between. On offer were hot dogs, beef burgers, cheese burgers and canned drinks. The sausages and beef burgers are made by our local butcher- you cannot get better than that!

With so many events going on in the two villages we lost many of the committee members, but we had just enough on hand to keep the food crossing the counter and by five thirty we had sold out.

Our next fund-raising event will be the Robert Arkenstall School Summer Fayre on 12 July 2008.

Welcome to the Haddenham Bonfire Committee blog.

We shall be supporting the Haddenham Village Blossoms and Bygones on 11 May by serving hot dogs and burgers etc from our marquee on The Green. This is a great day out for family and friends. For a small fee you can visit many village attractions such as the famous Brick Museum or the ancient Great Mill (now working). There is an exhilarating tractor trailer service to whisk you from place to place- see the village from high up on a surprisingly fast trailer. One fee covers it all plus there is a range of refreshments for sale, and much more...

In the Summer we hope to be invited back to the Robert Arkenstall Summer Fayre to serve food. (Our sausages, from the local butchers, are especially tasty)

The Autumn will see another of our successful Fun Runs; this year it is Sunday 14 September in the morning. Paticipants vary from serious runners to families out for a pleasant stroll away from traffic. One thing they all have in common- they are out for fun!

Of course in November we shall be putting on our annual family firework show and bonfire: Friday evening 7 November.

BONFIRE NIGHT 2007

The nearest Friday night to the 5th of November has become the regular time for our annual Bonfire Night. This year we had a very mild and dry night, with clear skies to show off the display. People began queuing before the gates opened at 6.30 and we had a steady flow of spectators for the next hour.

The Guys were judged and the huge bonfire lit, by now host to a good selection of Guys. Fairchild’s Meadow was soon a cheery place with the warm glow of the fire and a good-sized crowd enjoying the exceptionally mild evening. Our food marquee did a roaring trade selling hot dogs, burgers, drinks, baked potatoes and soup to fend off any hunger pangs before the spectacular firework display got underway at 7.30.

Somehow the small team of pyrotechnic experts improves the display every year. This year the fireworks were sent high above the bonfire so they lost none of their spectacular beauty against the dark sky. A stunning series of fireworks of every description shot above our heads to burst in all directions. The finale was a continuous spread of crackling, glorious colour right across the full width of the field. It was not allowed to fade as more and more fireworks were sent up to add to the spectacle.

This is surely a great way for a family to enjoy this annual reminder of what might have been seen over the remains of the Houses of Parliament if Guy had not been discovered! Thanks to all participants and to the many others who helped in organising, registration, record keeping, cooking, marshaling and all the countless little tasks that make the day a success- thank you all! We must not forget to thank the land owners who allowed us free access to their land, the Robert Arkenstall School for sending forms home, the Village Voice for advertising our events, and the Barber Shop for having stocks of forms available- thank you all as well!.

Last year our annual Fun Run was held in scorching hot weather which was a little stressful for some, so this year we decided to move to September. As it happened Sunday September 16 2007 was another brilliant day, but not quite so hot, so the field of 60 participants had a very pleasant time.

As always there were really keen runners and Kevin Dolan came back first, completing the 5km route in 19min 14 seconds; more than two minutes ahead of the second place. (All the results are on the other post).

Others treated the event as an opportunity to stroll round in groups chatting and enjoying the countryside. As most of the route is off road what could be better than walking with friends in perfect weather, not having to worry about traffic?

Even the gentlest strollers were back within the hour: Well done Helen and Sarah!

Once back in Fairchild's Meadow participants and marshals were able to sit on the grass enjoying our hot dogs and drinks while waiting for the prizes to be awarded. Every participant had a commemorative medal and the top three in each age group received bronze, silver or gold medals. The top boy and girl in each group also had a certificate which will admit them to Bonfire Night free on Friday 2nd November 2007.

Everyone had a very enjoyable morning and no doubt they will be back next year...

This completes our support activities this year. We had a barbecue at Haddenham's Blossoms and Bygones in May, and again at the Robert Arkenstall School Fayre in July. These events all help to keep our funds healthy for our annual Bonfire Night which features a massive bonfire and an excellent display of fireworks. As usual it will be in the Fairchild's Meadow at the bottom of Chewells Lane (off Hop Row). This year it will be on Friday 2nd November. More details will be posted nearer the time.

The Haddenham Bonfire Committee Fireworks 3 November 2006

It was a dastardly act to choose a winter’s night to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Generations of our citizens have had to endure the cold and wet as they celebrated the timely discovery of Mr Guy Fawkes and his 36 barrels of gunpowder.

Not this year though! We had a pleasant dry evening with a clear sky and, if you wrapped up warm, you would not have been too cold as you watched the brilliant display of fireworks sent up by Pete, Cliff and Dave.

The Guy competition was judged this year by Julie Williamson. Two children got in free with each guy and there were cash prizes for the top three. All the Guys went up in flames when the winner started the fire.

A good spread of hot food and drinks were available throughout the evening, so the hundreds of visitors were able to warm up inside and out as they gathered round Robert Norman’s huge bonfire.

Once again the committee had organised a safe event where families could, for a modest sum, gather with their friends to watch the spectacular display.

The Haddenham Bonfire Committee Fun Run 2006

Sunday July 16 dawned dry and clear. A relief for the organisers of this annual event; four years in a row of fine weather. After only 45 minutes of registration we had 72 runners champing at the bit, ready to face the three mile circuit.

The Bonfire Committee’s main purpose is to ensure there is always enough cash to put on a decent firework display on the nearest Friday to the 5th November. This year it will be on the 3rd, so make a note in your diary now.

This Fun Run is one of the events we organise during the year, but it’s not just about raising funds. We want everyone to come and enjoy a morning in the countryside. Many of the runners are very serious about their performance and treat the event as an important challenge to beat as many others as they can and improve on their previous time. Many come to stroll round the course enjoying countryside they would not normally see. Just a few yards are on a road; all the rest is on paths and tracks in scenery that is just not available to us as we whiz around in our cars. This event gives us a chance to walk and chat without worrying about road safety all the time.

The really quick runners got across Fairchild’s Meadows in no time, through the kissing gate and along the track past the Guppy ponds, visible through breaks in the hedge. Thanks to Anson’s they took a short cut, missing that dangerous junction and almost immediately joined the level route of the old railway. On to a station- our drinks station that is, where a quick swig was in order before the more arduous climb through the Hintons and back to the edge of Haddenham. Along the footpath to Chewells Lane and the welcome drop down to Fairchild’s Meadow and the finish line.

This year the temperature had climbed to33C in the recorders’ tent, so goodness knows what it was in the direct sun. Consequently the winner was just a little slower than last year. Connor Delaney in the 8-11 age group was the first home in 20minutes 40seconds, and he did not look too puffed out either! Some of the Over 16s followed soon after, but they were not all looking quite so cool….

There are five age bands and each has a prize for the first male and first female; that’s ten opportunities to be number one! Plus we present a shield to the winning Team. All the results are given below.

Most of the runners came in within half an hour and nearly everyone was back inside the hour. While waiting for the results to be worked out and double checked there was time to get more water or treat the family to fizzy drinks, hot dogs or burgers. Sitting and chatting in the sun, or nearby shade, made a pleasant interlude until the awards were given to the top three in each category. Then back home by 1pm for a well earned lunch and afternoon nap!

Our thanks to all 72 who took part, the various shops which kept stocks of entry forms, the School for advertising in the ‘bags’, The Voice for a whole page about the event and the several landowners who kindly allowed us to follow their tracks- thank you.
